I am looking for a picture of the left side on a F-100 p-4 flight helmet. I am
restoring one for my grandfather, Richard Morton, who served at itazuke in the
late 50s and early 60s as a pilot. He seems to remember it having a picture of
a "headhunter with a spear." Can anyone help me out please. 435-757-5717

I have what you may
consider an unusual request. I recently read the book, Cheers and Tears
by Lt Gen Charles G. Cooper, USMC Ret. In his book Cooper describes that
on June 17, 1951 he was a 2/Lt in command of a Marine platoon attempting to
assault a North Korean position on Hill 907. The situation became grim as
the Korean troops counter attacked in large numbers. In fear of being
overrun and massacred by the enemy, Cooper desperately called for air support.
Two F-80 pilots in the vicinity, monitoring the Marine radio position, indicated
they could give immediate help. They were each carrying two cans of
napalm. Cooper launched a smoke grenade in the direction of the enemy
troops and told the pilots to hit the smoke, which they did with great accuracy,
in Cooper's words "vaporizing" them in their tracks.
I was fascinated by
Cooper's description of this event as I had been an F-80 pilot in
Korea
but not until after the June 17, 1951 date. So I was able to locate Gen
Cooper's phone number and address and gave him a call at his
Falls Church
,
Virginia
home. He said he had always wanted to locate the pilots and thank them
but was never able. For one thing he was severely wounded during this
engagement and took years of rehab. He said he had contacted Hq
USAF, but had no luck in his quest. I told him I would give it a back
channel try utilizing whatever means I could come up with.
All this is by way
of saying perhaps you can help. I realize that after 55 plus years this
will be a difficult if not impossible task. Around that June 17, 1951 date
the F-80 units were in a state of flux and of course the pilots themselves may
have passed away.
Incidentally, I was
a member of the 36 FBS, but my friend Major Charles Loring was in the 80th.
We were all saddened by his death at the time, but at least he received
great recognition with the award of the Medal of Honor. If you have other
ideas on how I might proceed I would appreciate it.

Please, I am building a model of an F-80C and would like to mark it with the
personal markings of Maj. Charles J Loring, Jr., MOH, of the 80th
FBS/8thFBG/W. As a USAF firefighter, I was stationed at Loring AFB, ME for
four years. I believe the buzz number for his F-80 was FT-830 (from one of
my many Korean War/air war books). Also, if anyone has pics of Korean
War-era USAF or USN/USMC airfield crash and firefighting vehicles, please email
them to me. If anyone can help me with this, veterans, or maybe artist
Gerald Asher, I would appreciate it very much! Thank you all, Korean War
veterans, for your service. You are not forgotten by this 70's USAF
veteran and disabled firefighter!

I am chronicling all known ejections and am trying to make personal contact
with people or the relatives of people who have ejected, or even witnessed
ejections by enemy pilots to learn more about their ejections and to obtain
permission to include it in my files and where possible obtain a photo of the
ejectee. Would it be possible to include in your next newsletter a
request for such people to contact me or even email your members. I have
had the great privilege of the Red River Valley Association and the NAM-POWs
doing this and have received many helpful responses. If you can pass my
request on to any other organizations I would be most grateful as I do not
want to leave any avenue of research untried. The earliest ejectees I
have in my files are WW2 Luftwaffe pilots and crew who ejected from
He-219's and He-162 aircraft.

Hi, I bought my dad this little ashtray and I would like to know the story
behind it. It's an ashtray is like australia with the following city's on it:
Sydney, Canberra, Victoria, Melbourne, Adelaide, Fremantle, Perth, Broome,
Derby, Wyndham, Darwin, Cape York, Cairns, Jownsville, Queensland, Brisbane and
Sydney again. In the middle of the ashtray there is a kangaroo with around it
"WA, NHP, SA and probably AJ". On the ashtray with a standard is the
P-38 lightning. On the tail is says "Sydney" and on the wings from the
left to the right it says "Australia 1957 South Pacific".
I hope somebody can help me out. I've been looking everywhere but I can't find

Dear Headhunters,
I am searching for information about Harold G. Holmquist.
I was a Company mate of Hal's when we were together at West Point 1952-1956.
We were also together for 'Primary' and 'Basic' pilot training (as you can note
below). Unfortunately, I did not keep in contact with Hal through out his
Air Force career. As a result, I have little information about Hal's life
during the years 1957 - 1963. It is particularly important that I find a
Next of Kin, as permission is required in order to publish any information about
Hal's life.
The information collected will form a short biography of Hal for the West Point
Class of 1956 50th Reunion Yearbook. If It is possible, it will form the
basis for a 'Memorial Article' for the West Point Assembly magazine.
My 1st priority is to find a Next of Kin;
2nd priority is to confirm his assignments (my guesses are below) from 1957
until he was killed in an F-104C accident on 23 April 1963, at George AFB (on
the Cuddy Back ? A-G range).
3rd priority is stories, pictures, copies of orders, etc.
Harold Gordon Holmquist;
Born 21 December, 1931, in California?
His wife's name was Lois; married Hal in Florida in June, 1956
I believe they had one daughter.
This info is confirmed:
Primary Pilot Training 3307th PTGp,
Marana AB, AZ Aug 1956 - Mar 1957
Basic Pilot Training 3561st PTSq. Webb AFB, TX
Apr 1957-Sept 1957
